Google SEO and AI Search: what to check in October 2026
A dated review of Google's AI-content guidance, Search Console reports, eligibility controls and September spam update, with practical audit checks.
Start with pages that answer a real customer question, then verify how people can discover and use them. The audit below turns recent Google guidance into work a business owner, agency or developer can check.
Sources checked October 13, 2026. This is an AI-assisted source review and RankPropel's proposed audit method, not evidence of a ranking improvement. Google-specific guidance does not establish how other AI services select sources.
Recent changes and who they affect
| Date | Official update | Our application |
|---|---|---|
| October 8 | Google marked the September spam update complete. | Annotate September 24–October 8 in comparisons. Timing alone does not diagnose a site's traffic change. |
| October 8 | Documentation added for the UGC Fresh Data Program. | Consider only for qualifying platforms with substantial, public user-generated content. This is not a submission route for ordinary SaaS landing pages or a private playbook library. |
| October 1 | The AI-content guide added references to quality-rater guidance. | Review originality, accuracy and usefulness in automated drafts, including metadata and alt text. Rater guidance is not a checklist that guarantees rankings. |
| September 24 | Search Console announced web multimodal reporting. | Check whether image-led searches produce data for the property before prioritizing visual-search work. |

1. Check eligibility before changing copy
Google's AI optimization guide calls for indexed, snippet-eligible pages and inclusion through the Search generative AI control in Search Console. It does not require special AI schema, llms.txt or writing in small chunks. Meeting the conditions does not guarantee a supporting link. Google's AI optimization guide.
Record the property and its effective control setting, including inheritance from parent properties. Do not infer it from robots.txt or change the owner's inclusion preference as an automatic fix. The control governs participation in applicable Search AI features; it is separate from ordinary indexing and AI-training controls. Search generative AI control.
For each priority URL, save the response status, crawl directives, canonical, internal links and content available to the reader. Check rendered output when JavaScript affects the page. A crawler-name test alone cannot prove indexing or selection.
2. Review the facts an agent might publish
Google's updated AI-content guidance calls for manual fact-checking before publication, including titles, descriptions, structured data and image alt text. Generating many pages without added value can violate its scaled-content policy. AI-generated content guidance.
Our review card asks:
- What customer decision does this page help with?
- Which claims can the product owner substantiate?
- What original example, test, explanation or evidence does it add?
- Do prices, limitations, author information and markup agree with the visible page?
- Who will check the proposed changes before they are published?
Mark missing evidence as unknown. Do not fill the gap with invented experience, credentials or customer results. Google encourages clear authorship and context about how content was made. Helpful, people-first content.
3. Use the reports for the questions they answer
Google says its dedicated Generative AI performance reports reached all websites worldwide by August 31. They provide a view of impressions that are already included in overall performance totals, so adding the two totals would double-count visibility. Report announcement and rollout note.
The Search report covers AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google says insufficient impressions can explain a missing report; exclusion through the AI control can also matter. A missing report is not proof of a penalty or a measured zero. Record the available dates, pages, countries, devices and filters. Report documentation.
Multimodal reporting covers searches initiated with images, including Lens and Circle to Search. Check the property's available data; it is not a measure of every interaction with an image on your website. Multimodal reporting.
Keep four records separate: first-party visibility, a repeatable AI prompt sample, observed referral visits, and qualified conversions. A prompt sample cannot replace Search Console, and an impression cannot establish revenue.
4. Turn findings into a small implementation plan
This is RankPropel's suggested handoff format, not a Google requirement:
| Field | What the recipient needs |
|---|---|
| Finding | The affected URL and a specific observed problem |
| Evidence | Observation time, method, source and limitations |
| Priority | Customer impact, confidence and implementation effort |
| Fix | A concrete proposed edit with an owner |
| Acceptance check | How someone can verify that the defect is resolved |
| Follow-up | A comparison window and known confounding changes |
For example, an invented pricing page could show one price in its visible table and another in structured data. Correcting that mismatch has a verifiable acceptance check. It does not justify promising a citation increase.
An agent can collect evidence and prepare patches from this plan. Its report should distinguish checked facts, missing access and recommendations. Publication still needs the website owner's authorized workflow and review. A paid API or MCP connection is a way to deliver this work; it is not a Google ranking requirement.
