The domain pre-purchase checklist for indie devs
Before you register a domain, run this free six-point audit on its history. Spammy backlinks, gambling redirects, AI-content-farm signals, and PBN footprints all transfer to your new site. Copy-paste checklist, 30-minute run, free tools only.
Domains carry history. The .com you just registered may have spent 2019-2023 redirecting to a gambling site, hosting counterfeit-Nike storefronts, or pumping out 200 AI-generated articles a day before the algorithm caught up. Every one of those previous lives can quietly hold your new site back for 12-18 months — without you ever finding out why nothing ranks.

The six checks
Each check takes 2-5 minutes with free tools. Don't skip any of them.
1. Spammy backlinks
- Open
majestic.comorahrefs.com/site-explorer(free tier) - Paste the domain
- Trust Flow ÷ Citation Flow ≥ 0.3 (below 0.15 = walk away)
- Top 20 referring domains all look legitimate when spot-checked
2. Gambling, adult, or pharma history
- Open
web.archive.org/web/[the-domain] - Click through 10+ snapshots spread across different years
- No casino, sportsbook, or poker pages
- No adult content (NSFW imagery in snapshots)
- No pharmacy spam (Viagra, Cialis, Tramadol keyword stuffing)
- No foreign-language gambling or adult content — especially Russian, Chinese, or Indonesian
3. Counterfeit or fake-brand history
- Wayback search: domain + "buy", "discount", "outlet", or "official"
- No suspiciously cheap branded product pages (Nike, Louis Vuitton, Rolex, Apple)
- No "official" pages for brands the domain has no plausible relationship to
- No Cyrillic or CJK product listings (common counterfeit-storefront indicators)
4. AI spam / content-farm history (the 2025-2026 check)
This is the check nobody else's checklist covers. Look at Wayback snapshots from 2022 onward.
- No massive content output (100+ articles per month) on unrelated topics
- No telltale AI-generation tells in headlines: "delve into", "in today's digital landscape", "tapestry of", "navigate the complexities of"
- No generic affiliate roundup posts ("10 best X for Y") across dozens of unrelated niches
- No identical templated H1/H2 structure across hundreds of pages
Google's Helpful Content updates from 2024 onward explicitly target these patterns, and the demotion signal can persist on the domain after the content is gone.
5. PBN (private blog network) footprint
- No short-lived (6-18 month) thin-content blogs in Wayback
- No outbound links to unrelated commercial sites in adjacent industries
- No identical WordPress theme used across visibly different "brands"
- No author bylines, no contact page, no real business behind the writing
- IP history check at
viewdns.info/iphistory— no shared IP with thin-content neighbours
6. Redirect-only history
- Domain wasn't registered solely to 301-redirect link equity to someone else's money site
- If it was: verify the redirect target wasn't hit by a manual action
What to do when something flags

When in doubt: there are over 350 million registered .com domains. Pick a different one.
Tools — all free for one-off use
- web.archive.org — your primary source, infinite history
- majestic.com — free site explorer for the TF/CF ratio
- ahrefs.com/site-explorer — free tier shows top backlinks
- viewdns.info/iphistory — free IP history lookup
- whois.domaintools.com — WHOIS ownership history, free for one or two lookups per day
Paid bulk tools like SpamZilla, CatchDoms, and Karma.Domains exist, but you do not need them for a single domain. You need 30 minutes and the discipline to walk away from a name you have already started imagining your logo on.
A clean domain doesn't make your SEO. A dirty one breaks it before you start.
